TB skin testing (the Mantoux tuberculin skin test) is a simple and reliable test that helps determine if you have been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB).
During your visit, one of our experienced healthcare providers will inject a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) just beneath the skin of your forearm. You’ll be asked to return to our clinic within 48 to 72 hours so we can examine the injection site for any reaction, such as swelling or redness. This reaction helps us determine if you may have a latent or active TB infection.
● Why TB Skin Testing is Important:
Tuberculosis can exist in your body without causing symptoms—this is called latent TB infection. People with latent TB don’t feel sick and can’t spread the disease, but they are at risk of developing active TB, especially if their immune system weakens. Early detection with a TB skin test allows us to provide timely treatment, protecting both your health and the health of those around you.
● Your Partner in Prevention:
Early detection and treatment of TB are crucial steps in controlling and eliminating this serious disease. At Immediate Care of Oklahoma, we make it easy to get the testing and care you need, when you need it most.
TB skin test (Mantoux tuberculin skin test) helps determine if you have been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). This test is commonly required for employment, school, or certain medical procedures, and our experienced healthcare professionals ensure the process is quick, safe, and convenient.
During your visit, one of our trained providers will have you comfortably seated and expose a small area of your forearm. After cleaning the area, a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin solution will be injected just beneath the surface of your skin, forming a small, pale bump (wheal). This procedure is simple, and the injection is given on the inner side of the forearm.
We’ll give you clear instructions on how to care for the site and remind you to return to Immediate Care of Oklahoma within 48 to 72 hours for your follow-up visit. At this second appointment, our provider will examine the test area for any swelling or hardness (induration), measuring the reaction in millimeters. This measurement, along with your risk factors and medical history, will help us determine if your result is positive or negative.
TB (tuberculosis) skin testing—also known as the Mantoux tuberculin skin test—to help determine if you have been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
Understanding Your Results:
● Positive Result: A certain amount of swelling suggests exposure to TB bacteria. This does not necessarily mean you have active tuberculosis; you may have a latent TB infection, meaning the bacteria are in your body but not causing symptoms or spreading to others. Additional risk factors—such as HIV infection, recent contact with someone with active TB, or a weakened immune system—can influence how we interpret your result.
● False Positives: Prior BCG vaccination or exposure to similar bacteria can sometimes lead to false-positive results.
● Negative Result: This generally means you have not been infected with TB bacteria. However, in rare cases—especially if your immune system is weakened—the test might be negative even if you have been exposed.
If your TB skin test at Immediate Care of Oklahoma is positive, our providers may recommend additional testing, such as a chest X-ray or a blood test, to determine if you have active TB or just a latent infection. We will discuss your results with you and recommend any further steps or treatment if needed.
A TB skin test, also known as the Mantoux tuberculin skin test, is a critical screening tool for detecting exposure to tuberculosis (TB) bacteria. At Immediate Care of Oklahoma, we provide convenient and accurate TB skin testing for patients in Choctaw and across the metro area.
