Is the coronavirus disease more severe than the flu?
Yes, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is more severe than the flu. This is for several reasons. For one, people haven’t been able to build up an immunity yet to the coronavirus, which means more people are more susceptible to coronavirus infection, as opposed to flu infection. Also, people with the coronavirus are more likely to suffer severe symptoms, long-term complications (like lung damage), or even death. The coronavirus is very contagious too. In addition to all that, because COVID-19 is new, researchers don’t fully understand it yet, so there are some unknown factors. It’s important to take the coronavirus seriously and get tested if you have symptoms.
What are the symptoms of the coronavirus?
If you’re suffering from the symptoms commonly associated with the coronavirus, or if you’ve been around someone with the symptoms, you should get tested. The symptoms are typically:
- Dry cough
Most of the time, symptoms are mild, but they can be more significant or accompanied by other symptoms (like headache) or severe symptoms like:
- Shortness of breath and/or breathing problems
- Chest pain and/or chest pressure
- Loss of movement and/or even loss of speech
The symptoms in the list above require immediate medical attention, but it’s important to call before you go anywhere. This can prevent infecting other people.
In some cases, symptoms won’t show until 2 to 14 days after the day of infection, while in other cases, symptoms may not show at all. Please consider that even though you and the people you care about may seem or be symptom-free, it’s still important to wear a mask in public, wash your hands regularly, and socially distance even with family. There are other precautions to take, like the ones your local health officials recommend.
Is there a vaccine, drug, or treatment for COVID-19?
As of the time of this writing in October of 2020, there is no vaccine or cure for COVID-19, but countries around the world are working on a vaccine and a cure. There are some drugs and other treatments that can alleviate/control symptoms, like antibody treatment. These drugs and treatments can be made available for patients who need them. If you believe you or a loved one may be infected with the virus, please do not try to treat yourself, as this can hurt you more than help you, and professional testing and treatment should not be delayed and may be necessary.
As for testing, the nasal swab test is the one you’ll likely need, and it entails swabbing and testing a sample from your nasal cavity. Results are made available in a day or several days depending on whether there’s a backlog of tests to run.
Our clinic is able to provide the nasal swab test, but please do not come see us in-person for this test, as there is a risk of infecting our other patients and our staff. There’s also a risk of infecting yourself if you’re currently healthy. Instead, please call our clinic so one of our staff members can evaluate your symptoms remotely. If necessary, the staff member will schedule you in for a telemedicine appointment with a doctor or ask you to come by our clinic’s curbside for a test.
A telemedicine appointment is an audio or video conference done with a phone, smartphone, tablet, computer, or other device. Please understand that telemedicine is best and even necessary when there’s a significant risk of infecting other people in-person.
Where can I get OKC Yukon COVID testing?
You can get tested with Immediate Care of Oklahoma, but please call us instead of coming to visit us. When you call, we’ll evaluate your symptoms over the phone and, if necessary, recommend a telemedicine visit or a test at our clinic’s curbside. Our staff truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation!
