Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are conditions that are spread through sexual activities, such as unprotected intercourse. At urgent care clinics, like Immediate Care of Oklahoma, our facilities are set up to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the facility, which adds an extra layer of confidentiality for patients who are concerned they have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infection (STI), or those who suspect that they have an STD or STI. Since our urgent care has on-site labs, you will not have to worry about going elsewhere to get blood testing or swab testing of the potentially affected area. Many do not realize what used to be considered sexually transmitted diseases are now considered sexually transmitted infections, as the term disease indicates that it is a lifelong condition, whereas infections can be fully irradiated through the use of medications like antibiotics.
STD/STI tests can vary based on the concerns that you have and if you have been informed to be tested because of a previous partner. These tests can vary, as some may require blood tests, urine samples, and swabs of the penis, throat, vagina, or anus. The provider who is doing the tests will go over them in detail with you before they begin, so you are fully informed of what to expect while the tests are being done and how the process will be completed. The physician will also do a visual check of the area in which they will be looking for things like sores, abnormal discharge, and herpes sores. If the diagnosis process involves needing visual confirmation of the area, such as genital herpes, they may require you to come back when you are experiencing symptoms that would indicate an outbreak.
The symptoms associated with STDs and STIs can vary for each infection and disease, as some can present as early as 7 days after exposure while others may take up to one month to show. If you are concerned about exposure or having contracted an STD or STI, it is important to wait till you begin to show symptoms, as early testing done during the intubation period (from the time of contact to the onset of symptoms) means you risk getting a negative test as the body has not started to create the antigens needed to determine if you have caught an STD or STI.
Since STD screenings are done with different methods, the way they work will also vary. If you have a swab test done, the swab will be tested for any bacteria, cells, or the present discharge to determine the cause. If you have blood testing done for an STD or STI test, they are looking for what is known as antigens present in the blood. These antigens only form when the body has contracted something and can be viewed similarly to other testing that involves the use of a swab. A blood test can be used to confirm certain STDs or STIs, like syphilis, and can be done at the same time as swab testing.
Absolutely! Even if you don’t suspect you have an STD or STI and have no symptoms, it is still recommended to have an STD screening done at a minimum every six months if you are sexually active. The reason that it is recommended to be done so frequently is that, as mentioned previously, some STDs or STIs will take around 3 months to become active. It is also recommended for those who have had more than one partner in the last calendar year, as a safety precaution, as there are some STDs like HPV that have no symptoms in men or may not cause symptoms in women.
